Ven Pongal

It is a popular south indian savoury and spicy dish, made from moong dal, rice and other spices. it is typically served for morning breakfast with side dished like sambar and coconut based chutneys. the dish is primarily famous in tamilnadu.




Ingredients


Raw rice - 1 cup    Split yellow moong dal (pasi paruppu) -1/4 cup    Cashew nuts -6-7    Salt needed


Seasoning


Oil - 1 1/2 tbsp    Ghee - 1 1/2 tbsp    Ginger finely chopped - 1 tsp    Cumin/ Jeera seeds - 1 tsp    Whole black pepper - 1 tsp (crushed)    Curry leaves - few

Dry red chilli - 2


Method


  • In a pressure cooker add oil and ghee.Once its hot add ginger,cumin seeds.crushed black pepper,curry leaves,cashew nuts and dry red chilli.

  • Saute it for a minute and add rice and dal.

  • Saute it for a minute add 4 cups of water and salt.

  • Keep it for 4 whistle.

  • Remove the cooker from flame and wait for the whistle sound to goes off

  • Once its off open the lid add a tablespoon of ghee and mix it well.

Note


  • This recipe is for 3 persons.

  • It goes well with tiffen sambar and coconut chutny.
